On Gossip Girl, Leighton Meester plays Upper East Side penthouse princess Blair Waldorf. But in real life, Leighton is a lot more down to earth. In her recent chat with People, she talked about music, Gossip Girl fans and co-stars, media attention and (of course) clothes…

Q: What did you miss most while you were away during the strike?
Leighton Meester: I missed the people, the cast and the crew and the producers. Everyone is amazing. Also, [I missed] New York. I love New York. I came here a couple times but I’m getting back into the swing of things. New York is such a wonderful city.

Q: We heard you’ve been working on an album. Can you tell us about it?

Leighton Meester: I’m not signed to a label or anything. And I’m not really worried about that right now. I’ll probably be done in June so I don’t know when I might release it. It’s a collaborative effort. I write the lyrics and I work with my friend — a lot of the actual music we’ve made together and some of them are borrowed from other people that have given us music.

Q: Can you describe the sound?
Leighton Meester: It’s very pop but not too bubblegum. It’s just fun. I have a million things to write about. I’m having fun just exploring and experimenting. I’m not going too moody and sorrowful. It’s more fun music. There are infinite possibilities. We’re such a good team. It pretty much doesn’t feel like work. It’s fun and easy. It’s one of the most exhilarating things I’ve done.

Q: What do you think of all the fans that come out to watch you shoot your scenes?
Leighton Meester: We love the fans of Gossip Girl. They’re the reason the show is on. It’s cool to have them come and show their appreciation. They’re usually really cool people.

The CW hasn’t had an easy time defining its brand or finding an audience since it launched a couple of years ago.  Though the network combined the biggest hits from both UPN and the WB, such as Veronica Mars, Smallville, and Supernatural, this strategy didn’t translate into ratings gold.  Even the CW’s most popular series, America’s Next Top Model, has suffered from falling ratings this year.  It’s a network aimed at a young demographic, but it appears that the teen crowd may be consuming television shows in a way the Nielsen ratings don’t account for.

Could Gossip Girl finally be the show that helps the CW break out and make a name for itself?  Network president Dawn Ostroff thinks that the Upper East Siders have what it takes to become a cultural phenomenon.

Gossip Girl, which returns on Monday at 8pm, has been getting a lot of media attention since it launched its latest “OMFG” ad campaign.  Will the network’s decision to focus on sex and scandals pay off in the ratings department?  According to Ostroff, what constitutes a ratings hit is something that has to be reevaluated in this new age of time-shifted viewing and digital downloads.

April 17, 2008 (Burbank, California) ─ The CW announced today that “Gossip Girl,” which returns to the air with original episodes Monday April 21, (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET), will only be available on The CW for the final five episodes of the year: April 21, April 28, May 5, May 12 and May 19. These episodes will not be available for streaming.

“For these next five weeks the epicenter of the ‘Gossip Girl’ universe will be on The CW’s broadcast television airwaves,” said Dawn Ostroff, President, Entertainment.

In addition to its regular timeslot Mondays at 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET, encore episodes of “Gossip Girl” will air Sundays from 6:00-7:00 p.m. ET as part of The CW’s EasyView rebroadcast.

The CW will continue to provide exclusive online content to fans anxious to dial in to all things “Gossip Girl,” at cwtv.com, now and in the weeks ahead. New online content at cwtv.com will include post-episode interviews with “Gossip Girl” executive producer, Josh Schwartz, with commentary, analysis and a tease of future story arcs; exclusive behind-the-scenes moments featuring the stars of the show shot entirely on location in New York City (where “Gossip Girl” films); two-minute trailer recaps of every episode posted the day after Monday airings; and exciting Watch-and-Win contests where lucky fans can earn a trip for two to Manhattan to live like a “Gossip Girl.” Additionally, the passionate “GG” community can win a chance to host viewing parties, win prizes and get exclusive, character-based widgets who know that what it all comes down to is XOXO.
