The It Girl of Gossip Girl

The young woman who approached the table by the window at the Pinkberry on Eighth Avenue and 18th street was nervous, breathless. She was sorry to interrupt, sorry to be a bother, she said. It was just that she loved Taylor Momsen so much.

The just-barely-15-year-old Ms. Momsen, who plays aspiring queen bee Jenny Humphrey on the CW show Gossip Girl, gave the woman—who looked to be at least in her mid-20s, and was clutching a napkin and shaking like a whippet in winter—a warm, practiced smile and helped her locate a pen and piece of paper so she could sign the autograph on something suitable. Ms. Momsen scribbled her name with a girlish curlicue flourish, and offered a friendly wave goodbye as her fan skipped elatedly out the door.

It’s a regular occurrence now for Ms. Momsen (“The older girls get nervous. The younger girls, cry,” she said), who, over the summer, has become the obsession of a strange and ragged slice of New York. Even as her co-stars have ascended the ladder of gossip-worthiness—the golden-locked goddess Blake Lively and the impressively sideburned Penn Badgley have had a very public romance while dandy-dressing, secretly English Ed Westwick has hardly been shy about his carousing—Ms. Momsen has emerged as the show’s true It Girl: admired, lusted after and, of course, scorned. Girls and young women covet her style (which ranges from bright, simple and sophisticated to mix-and-match punk). Boys and men—in their teens and 20s and beyond—can’t help but be drawn to her coltish beauty (even as that fact could make them uncomfortable). And there are the requisite haters, too, so unnerved by Ms. Momsen’s uncanny poise and sudden ubiquity that they can’t help but snipe at her. As photographs of her—on location for Gossip Girl, making the rounds at parties and movie premieres, riding the subway around her newly adopted city—have cropped up on celeb-tracking blogs and Web sites, they’ve also collected captions and comments snarky and vicious enough to be straight from the cell phone of Gossip Girl’s eponymous blogger. Everyone’s Talking About Blake Lively

Blake Lively is starving. She slides into a booth at a charming restaurant in New York City’s West Village and immediately buries her head in the menu. “Let’s share a bunch of stuff,” she says, then adds, “On average, I order about three meals for myself in one sitting.” She isn’t kidding. Two bread baskets, two appetizers, two pasta entrées, and three desserts later, she decides that’s enough food…to start with.

Spoilers from Kristin!!

Lory in New York: What is gonna happen when our Gossip Girl favorites graduate school? Please, tell me anything. You know we love you.

Looks like the Gossip Girl series is sticking close to the books when it comes to college admissions: In an upcoming ep, several of the kids head to New Haven to check out the Yale campus. If they eventually graduate, they’ll join a prestigious list of fictional Yale alumni that includes Rory Gilmore (Gilmore Girls), Joshua Lyman (The West Wing) and Montgomery Burns (The Simpsons).

Leighton Meester: Racy Gossip Girl Ads Are ‘Smart’ and ‘Cool’

Critics and parents may be seeing red over the latest round of racy Gossip Girl ads, but the show’s stars don’t mind at all.

“We just end up seeing it on a billboard somewhere,” Leighton Meester told Access Hollywood at the Teen Choice Awards Sunday. “But I think that it’s smart and it’s fine and it’s cool.”

The ad campaign, which launched last April when the show came back from hiatus, has continued into the summer with irreverent print ads featuring racy scenes from the coming season and negative critic reviews of the CW show — used to promote its drama.

“They’re very smart,” said Chace Crawford, who plays Nate Archibald on the show. “Everybody keeps saying they’re so racy, of course they’re racy, but you say they’re smart.”

Smart, maybe. Controversial, definitely. And the show has no plans to stop with its headline-grabbing antics, including some new rhetoric being introduced on the show.

“There’s a lot more [language],” Meester said. “I say Bass-hole, I say something else, but it’s all Chuck Bass-related.”

For his part, Ed Westwick, who won Favorite TV Villain at the awards for his naughty portrayal of Bass on the show, is a huge fan of the ad campaign.

“I love [the attention],” he said. I can’t get enough of it.”

Chace Crawford Says His Soulmate Will ‘Make Me Laugh’

Chace Crawford may be known as Gossip Girl’s heartthrob Nate Archibald, but if that acting thing doesn’t work out, the 23-year-old actor could always try relationship counseling.

In the September issue of the U.K. edition of Glamour magazine, Crawford offers dating tips and love advice in a one-time-only “Dear Chace” column. Here’s a peek at the bachelor’s top tips for the ladies:

On what ‘not to do’ on a first date: “An obnoxious laugh, swearing like a sailor, bad breath, breaking wind, getting blackout drunk, talking about your exes. It’s a long list!”

On being a bit heavy and feeling self-conscious: “Some guys really dig love handles! Your issues seem to be more about you than your boyfriend. It sounds like you should hit the gym, not for your body or your boyfriend, but for your mind.”

On knowing you’ve found your soulmate: “I believe we all have a handful of soulmates. The most important thing to me is someone who makes me laugh. I know that’s cheesy, but really it’s not as complicated as you think.”

On going on a date, thinking it went well but then not hearing from the guy again: “You can’t please everyone. As long as you’re having fun in the meantime, it will happen. I try to get to know the girls I’m attracted to without having an official ‘date.’ I keep it light, become their best friend and hold off on the romance. If you’re friends first, the rest of it happens more naturally.”

Crawford and his Gossip Girl castmates return to television Monday, September 1.

Is Gossip Girl the New Face of Teen Fashion?

Why are teens donning knee-highs, plaid skirts and the pricey designs of Tory Burch? Thank the CW’s (CBS) (TWX) Gossip Girl for the newfound preppy with-a-touch-of bohemian style that’s hitting malls nationwide.

As teens tune in to check out the latest styles worn by characters Serena, Blair and Chuck, fashion retailers are seeing serious results. And now that the CW and Gossip Girl are focusing on customization, helping teens mix and match, TheStreet.com’s Kristin Bentz says retailers like Urban Outfitters (URBN) and J-Crew (JCG) are profiting even more.

Check out the video to see how Gossip Girl is changing the face of retail fashion and merchandising.

Thanks to Amanda for sending this in!
