GG takes off!

Gossip Girl is really taking off this yearOMG, indeed. The second season of Gossip Girl is living up to its immense hype – and is actually getting better as time goes on.

This is a rare feat in television, where promotional campaigns showcase the two to three watchable scenes in an entire season of a disappointing show (see Private, Practice), or when a once-terrific series begins a precipitous decline immediately after realizing its potential (see Anatomy, Grey’s).

Fortunately for fans of Gossip Girl, executive producer Josh Schwartz saw this happen to one of his previous brainchildren, The OC.

That promising teen drama delivered a terrific first season (2003-2004) on Fox, but quickly flamed out when the creative idea well ran dry – and perhaps more significantly, the light-hearted tone that made the poor-kid-in-rich-kid-land Orange County soap so engaging was somehow lost.

This time around, that’s where Gossip Girl shines most.

The acting may not be top notch (Blake Lively, Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick are terrific, but Chace Crawford gets by mostly on his man-bangs), and some of the scenes are laughably unrealistic (most high school kids we knew wouldn’t be sipping martinis in swanky clubs even if they wanted to), but as long as the show remains witty and doesn’t fall into the trap of taking itself too seriously, these things make it more enjoyable, not less.

Therein lines the brilliance of Gossip Girl. It’s the ultimate guilty pleasure show, a tantalizing and voyeuristic look into the lives of Manhattan’s elite. But its comedic timing is top notch, and the father-son tandem of Rufus and Dan Humphrey (played wonderfully by Matthew Settle and Penn Badgley) deliver the perfect dose of heart and soul.

Whereas The OC devolved into a bad caricature of itself and was laden by violence and unsatisfying plot lines from its sophomore season on, Schwartz’s new project is actually building on its first-year success by refining what it does best, not trying to become what it’s not.

With its romantic cat-and-mouse games and tales of forbidden love, not to mention epic high school backstabbing sessions, overall cattiness and eye-opening fashion, Gossip Girl is giving the fans what they want, week in and week out.

‘Gossip Girl’ Gives Us the Chance of a Lifetime

Chris may have his moment now but Jessica's will come later, she KNOWS it will.

Sometimes we get pissed off at America. “America,” we say, when we feel like we are being tested, “Why do you make so many mean people, and stupid people, and arrogant people, and fat people, and unfriendly cashiers?” And America is like, “You’re just jealous,” because America knows that will always stump us, even though it doesn’t really make any sense. But then there are some moments when we are so glad we live in the U.S. of A. Because it is a meritocracy! A land where your dreams can be achieved, as long as you want it enough! And as long as you own a formal gown in a cool “icy” color, such as ivory, silver, light-gray, slate, ice-blue, ice-violet, and are basically thin and blond and white or you know, white-acting:

Central Casting NY is seeking Non-Union talent with elegant, full-length formal wear to work as background in an upcoming episode of Gossip Girl. We are currently seeking women who can portray Upper East Side types between the ages of 18 and 28 with formal gowns in cool “icy” colors such as ivory, silver, light grey, slate, ice blue, ice violet, etc.

And sometimes, just sometimes, America ups the ante and hands you a chance to really make something of yourself!

And sometimes she gives it to your FUCKING co-editor:

We are also seeking gentleman who can portray 18-28 y/o with full traditional black tuxedos with ivory or buff colored vests.

Sorry, we got a little overexcited there. But you know, it’s fine. Some people are just meant to hang around in the background for a little while, because some people’s special chances come later in life. Some people just have different paths, you know. Because it’s all a journey.

Gossip Girl Author Loves the Show, Hates Vanessa

Adaptations from page to screen can be bumpy, but Gossip Girl author Cecily von Ziegesar says overall Josh Schwartz and his crew have been spot-on.

“I’m a very faithful watcher… Generally I’m entertained and I think it’s great,” she tells MTV.com. Von Ziegesar does have one bone to pick with the producers: their depiction of the TV version of Vanessa, played by Jessica Szohr.

“I think Vanessa is one character they ruined,” she says. “In the book, she’s kick-ass and has a shaved head and wears lots of black. I think a lot of the readers who don’t usually read teen fiction identify with Vanessa,” In the show, Vanessa has more of a bohemian hipster look.

The author clarifies that it has nothing to do with Szohr, adding: “I just wish Vanessa was like she is in the books a bit more.”

She may disapprove of Dan Humprey’s bff, but von Ziegesar gives the rest of the characters a thumbs up, admitting she loves bad boy Chuck Bass.

“Leighton Meester is totally perfect for Blair, and Blake [Lively] is perfect for Serena. I was more worried they would insert Barbie-doll-looking people, which they didn’t,” says von Ziegesar. “I think the actors do a brilliant job. Chuck is my favorite character, and the way he looks and acts is in keeping with how he is in the beginning of the series.”

Gossip Girl gets Yale all wrong

It doesn’t look like the real Yalies are pleased with Gossip Girl’s recent portrayal of their school.

According to this article from the Yale Daily News, the CW show relied heavily on Yale stereotypes. The article explains that many students were buzzing with excitement before Monday night’s episode, but ended up being let down. Although there were some realistic references to the school such as the Skull and Bones and the Harvard-Yale football game, students said they were dissapointed with the overall episode.

Yale students said that the show’s portrayal of the admissions process was completely false and inaccurate. Serena, Blair and Dan would never have been granted private interviews with the dean of admissions and the two back-stabbing friend would never have scored an invite to his house for a party. In fact, Jeff Brenzel, the real dean of admissions, said: “I don’t do any interviews of applicants or potential applicants, so I’m not in the position of advising anyone.” He also added: “I certainly do not hold or attend private dinners for candidates.”

One freshman counselor, Katie Zimmerman, even organized a Gossip Girl party for freshmen because she is such a fan of the show. However, she ended up being disappointed with the result of the episode: “It didn’t bring out the Yale that we all know and love, but instead just used stereotypes about Yale. It was kind of a failure.”

Many fans are speculating about whether or not this episode was potentially setting up the show’s future at the New Haven school. If the producers do decide to take Gossip Girl to the ivy leagues, it looks like they may have their work cut out for them.
